About Lower Luangwa National Park

Located along the lower stretches of the Luangwa River in eastern Zambia, Lower Luangwa National Park encompasses expansive floodplains, dense riverine forests, and seasonal wetlands. Established to protect this vital ecosystem, the park covers a vast area of diverse habitats that support abundant wildlife, including elephants, lions, leopards, buffalo, and large populations of hippos and crocodiles. The park is less visited than its northern counterpart, South Luangwa National Park, offering a more untouched and remote wilderness experience. Historically, the region was a hunting concession before its designation as a protected area in the late 20th century. Visitors have the opportunity to participate in guided walking safaris, game drives, bird watching, and boat excursions along the river, which provides unique access to aquatic wildlife and bird colonies. Notable landmarks within the park include the seasonal oxbow lakes and lagoons formed by the meandering Luangwa River. The park's biodiversity is exceptional, with over 400 species of birds recorded, making it a critical site for both resident and migratory birds. The Lower Luangwa also plays a crucial role in the conservation of the African wild dog and offers one of the most secluded safari experiences in Zambia. Due to limited infrastructure and its remote location, this park appeals to adventurous travelers and conservationists looking for an undisturbed African wilderness.
